Ghang Thai Kitchen Now Open on Smith Street

Ghang Thai

Ghang Thai Kitchen has opened in the space on Smith Street in Carroll Gardens formerly occupied by Tuk Tuk. The latter was, once upon a time (2002-03ish) a fairly decent Thai eatery (for Brooklyn), but had gone way down hill. It got a frighteningly bad score from the Health Department not long before it went to the big restaurant graveyard in the sky. Ghang Thai, meanwhile, was previously noted for having a pre-opening sign in the window that said, "Ghang Thai Kitchen Serve Thai Food."

In any case, the new restaurant looks nice and the menu is solid. It doesn't break any new ground, but offers an assortment of the dishes one would expect--pad kra prow, pad prik khing, all the basic curries, etc. All dishes are available with chicken, pork, beef, squid, shrimp, vegetarian duck and vegetables and tofu. In its favor, is the fact that there's nothing too cutesy on the menu.

We await the reviews.

I love this place!
I just kinda wandered in one night and had the Duck Noodles. Lots of broth (tasty and unusual) and lots of duck. I have been back a few times with friends, and it's always a good meal. They play cool, loungey music and are very friendly as well. My new favorite restaurant on Smith Street, and judging by the crowds (that Tuk Tuk never had), others love it too.

This place is awful! I had the worst service I have ever experience in my entire life - no one talked to us when we came in until I went to the back and spoke to the people myself. It's BYOB, so you'd expect them to be ready to open our alcohol, but despite repeated requests to have our beers opened, it took them 40 minutes! It was really annoying. How difficult is it for every waiter and waitress to carry around a bottle opener? Also, whenever I tried to flag down a waiter, they looked the other way. The food was okay, though more expensive and smaller proportions than Joya, which also has much better food. My girlfriend's Tofu Pad See Yue was really bad - really just a plate of flat noodles with some cracked pepper on it and some mushy tofu scattered around the side of the plate.

I would never, ever come back here. It is awful, and with the kind of service we experienced, the place should do everyone a favor and shut down.
