"Don't Demo Domino" Fundraiser Announced

Domino From KentWith the Domino Refinery in Williamsburg in the process of possibly being designated as a landmark, there will be a "Don't Demo Domino" concert fundraiser on June 3 from 2PM-8PM in Grand Ferry Park in Williamsburg. The email we got says, in part:
Community leaders and local rock bands will gather on the Williamsburg waterfront on June 3, 2007, to participate in a benefit "friendraiser" concert to save the historic Domino's Sugar Factory from demolition. Concert organizers Act Local have partnered with the Waterfront Preservation Alliance to produce the event. The lineup includes nationally known acts like Nada Surf, The Wau Wau Sisters, and The Hungry March Band, as well as emerging acts Cheeseburger, Vic Thrill and the Saturn Missile, and The Black Tie Party.
More details to follow.

Racist Williamsburg not for profits trying to prevent afffordable housing by landmarking the Domino building making it too expensive for the 50% affordable housing plan the developer originally discussed. Very sneaky. Go to the fundraiser only if you are also a racist.

In fact, the landmarking is only the first step in an attempt to get affordable housing on the site. There are several examples in NYC of former factories being turned into affordable housing. The developers want to tear the buildings down and put in luxury housing.

ALso, you are clearly nuts.

In fact, LPC is only looking to landmark one of the buildings which would not hinder the development of affordable housing. The racist Williamsburg not for profits (Im' guessing commenter # 2 is one of their lying members) want to landmark the other building also, which are not compatible with easy residential conversion. This is the sneaky tactic that these racists are using. The affordable housing group "Churches united" are also against this landmarking tactic. The developer's original plan was for 50% affordable housing. Now with the landmarking, they say they would only be able to do 20% affordable. No, I'm not nuts. When people resort to calling others nuts, it usually means that they are hiding something. Don't support these racist not for profits!

So you think local nonprofits are "sneaky" but the developer is on the up and up?

Developers may not be angels, but when not for profits organizations act in a coordinated way to promote racist agendas, they also need to be taken to task.

Perhaps you are unaware that the owners of the site have taken former factories in other part of the city, preserved the buildings, and then put in affordable housing. Landmarking the site doesn't mean that there won't be affordable housing--in fact it makes it more likely that there will be affordable housing.

Also, Churches United did NOT say they are against preserving the buildings. They said they are against preserving the buildings IF it means there will be no affordable housing. If the buildings are preserved and there is still affordable housing, which is likely what will happen, Churches United is down for the plan.

Furthermore, the owners of the site have said that they want to preserve the buildings. They took out a full page ad in the Brooklyn Rail stating this. They are a for-profit company, btw.

Catholic Charities and St Nicholas are both supporting the concert. Finally, it is not a fundraiser, it is a free show. No money is being raised. You have nearly every fact wrong.

Landmarking all of the buildings will reduce the percentage of affordable housing. It is a sneaky racist tactic that not everyone is blind to. And please don't bring up St. Nicks support in defense. St. Nicks is a mouth piece of the elected officials who keep it afloat. They've been involved in some very shady deals.
