Battle of 360 Smith Street: Fight for Your Right to Plaza
The Battle of 360 Smith Street will heat up again tomorrow (Wednesday, 6/6) with a rally at 12:30 that is being organized by Council Member Bill de Blasio. (We've gotten four press release emails about the rally, not counting emails that have simply mentioned it.) Although architect Robert Scarano is said to have redesigned the building from a metallic exterior to red brick, many residents want to preserve the plaza in front of the Carroll Street subway entrance at Second Place and Smith Street. They are also pushing to shave some height from the building and to ensure that it blends more with the surrounding neighborhood in terms of its style. Resident will discuss the proposed development at the next meeting of the Carroll Gardens Neighborhood Association, which takes place on June 11 at Scotto's Funeral Home on First Place.

It's worth noting that there have been several hundred complaints against Scarano for violations of the self-regulating application of building codes, including especially that he builds to vastly higher heights than is legal. So far the city has declined to make him tear any down, but many of his projects have been delayed repeatedly for long periods of time - as in the example around the corner at 10-14 4th St. The NYTimes ran a lengthy article about him last year or so; at least at that time, his record of infringing against the building code was many multiples of the next runner-up. Not a good guy, and if you're opposed to the 360 Smith project, it might not be a bad idea to contact your reps and ask them exactly why Scarano continues to be licensed despite his record.
