Check Out a Vid of Brooklyn's New Chartreuse Bike Lane
It's been quite the week for bikes. Progress has been swift on the Ninth Street Bike Lane in Park Slope. The new bike parking at the Bedford L stop in Williamsburg (NYC's first loss of parking spaces for the benefit of bikes) is finished. And, we have a chartreuse bike lane on Henry Street, which is what this Street Films vid is all about. We've never used the word "chartreuse" in a post before, so we're happy that Street Films gave us the chance.

Bike lanes are great, and to have better visibility of them is a terrific and welcome improvement. However, I would like to see a proportional improvement in bicycle riders adherence to the rules of the road. Many times I have seen justifiable complaints about car drivers' endangering the lives of bike riders, however, as a conscientious driver who often encounters the bike lanes in Brooklyn Heights and Carroll Gardens, I am often forced to drive defensively to avoid hitting a bike rider running the red light, ignoring a stop sign or dangerously criss crossing through traffic. Up until recently I thought that NY road rules must not apply to bike riders, but apparently that is not the case. So if riders are to fully benefit from the added security of having their own bike lanes, they must also take the added responsibility of adhering to the laws of the road.
