Bklink: Discrimination Suit

Real estate agency Brown Harris Stevens is being sued for allegedly discriminating against families with children. The suit charges that the agency discriminated against a couple with a child looking at rental apartments in Brooklyn Heights and Park Slope. Testers without children were able to get apartment for which couples children had been turned away. Discrimination against families with children is said to be fairly widespread, particularly with apartment rentals.--NYT

Bklink: Earth Day "All These Damn Trees" Special

Is there such a thing as "too many trees"? There is in Borough Park. "Too much green is making a Borough Park block red with anger. The rest of the city may be going green, but the folks living there on the block say it has gone too green. They're outraged that the city tore up their sidewalks to make room for more foliage. "Do they think I'm Johnny Appleseed, with all these damn trees?" asked Gus Caleca, 39, who works as a disk jockey. "We have enough trees and we don't need anymore." The neighborhood mutiny among 59th St. residents sprouted earlier this month after 10 new trees were planted on the block between 10th and 11th Aves. Now, residents are complaining that the recent planting leaves no space on the sidewalk for people to walk.--NYDN

A new bill being introduced in the City Council could give some teeth to community-based planning for rezoning and other initiatives. The legislation, which is an offshoot of a Municipal Art Society effort, would give extend the influence of what are known as 197-a plans.
