Mystery of Deliberate Brooklyn Bridge Traffic Jams Solved!

Well, one of the Top Ten Brooklyn Mysteries has been solved. If you ever cross the Brooklyn Bridge, you probably wonder why police cars are sitting there, blocking one lane and sometimes causing epic traffic jams. We knew that it was some sort of security operation, but never had much detail beyond that. Now we know: They're there, apparently, because there are no security cameras.

From today's Daily News:
Mayor Bloomberg sympathized with a frustrated Brooklyn Bridge commuter yesterday, but police officials say squad cars will stay on the Brooklyn Bridge during rush hour until a new security plan is ready.

"When I go across the bridge, I get as annoyed as you do," Bloomberg told a caller to his radio show.

But Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly noted the bridge has long been a terrorism target, and said the cars will stay until new cameras can be installed.

"We're very much aware of the problem, doing everything we can to expedite the installation of cameras there," Kelly said.

All well and good, but mindboggling in what it implies. The police cars have been there for nearly five years, and we have to ask: How long does it take to hire someone to install some freaking security cameras? What kind of cameras, exactly, is the city trying to install? And, how many more years will it take to "expedite" the solution? Truly, one can't make up stuff like this.

Those cruisers have cost me countless waits and expensive cab rides for the past five years. Seriously, can't they work something out with PACE to install a few cameras? Or City Hall at the foot or the NYC high school situated there as well on the Manhattan side?

your tax dollars, hard at work, padding the payroll at the police dept. at the exense of nyc commuters. 5 years of police bridge parking, one (or two?) officers per squad car, 2 cars, plus overtime pay, let's see that's....alot. probably enough to buy an entire security camera COMPANY.

I don't buy it. What does a squad car have to do with the absence of security cameras? I've never seen cameras in the squad cars. Nor are there any cops in the squad cars watching traffic as it goes by.

This whole thing makes no sense. If it was really about cameras, it would have been solved long ago. I don't believe them.

Mystery unsolved!

Every major New York City bridge or tunnel seems to have at least one manned police car parked by the entrance or on the shoulder of the road, so what I don't understand regarding those police cars on the Brooklyn Bridge is why 1. the police cars are parked in a traffic lane, and 2. the cars always seem to be empty.

Everyone loves a good conspiracy theory, so I have come up with a theory to explain it. The Brooklyn Bridge is the only toll-free crossing that connects directly to the FDR (i.e. you don't have to get off the highway), so I think the city is purposely causing traffic so that when someone is driving down the FDR and sees the traffic pileup, they'll use a toll crossing instead, such as the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel.

you need to post more comments - this is an important topic - let's also address the adams and tillary street location where police cars are parked 24/7 -

the adams and tillary "cop posing in the car" is a incredible waste of taxpayer money. WHY? They DO NOTHING BUT SLEEP, TALK ON THEIR CELL, EAT, SLEEP, TALK TO THEIR FELLOW LAW ENFORCEMENT FRIENDS.
Concord Village owners are sick of having to pass by them 24/7

I think that the true logic for the "police" presence on the bridge is found in their location. Take a close look and think about the structural dynamics of a suspension bridge...

try testing the logic....drive past the police car on adams and tillary and let us know how attentive the police are to any suspicious activities???true waste of tax dollars...not to mention the environmental concerns while the cars are running 24/7.
